Fair clothing and clean electricity – How to get both

What green electricity has to do with fair fashion

We all know about the negative impacts of fast-fashion clothing. Poor working conditions in production facilities, high levels of waste, environmental pollution from the use of chemicals, and much more. But did you know that the fashion industry produces 5 to 10 percent of all global greenhouse gases? This is due, among other things, to the high electricity consumption, especially in the factories producing fast-fashion clothing. The fashion industry not only requires a lot of resources but also consumes a lot of energy, which further exacerbates its negative impact on the environment.

High energy consumption in the production of fast-fashion clothing

Fast-fashion clothing is often made from man-made fibers, especially polyester (a plastic fiber). About 60% of fast-fashion garments are made from this material. Polyester requires a lot of energy during production. A lot of water is heated to process the fibers, and the clothing then needs to be dried. Dyeing also requires a lot of energy, as the clothing needs to be made waterproof afterward.

These processes often take place in factories in China, Bangladesh, or India, where coal is still used as the primary energy source. Coal is the dirtiest energy source due to its high carbon emissions. This leads to significant CO₂ emissions from the use of fossil fuels.

Tips to reduce your energy consumption and carbon footprint

When buying new clothing, it's better to opt for natural fibers . These fabrics are usually not only of much better quality, but also more energy-efficient during production and processing. But be careful: not every fabric made from natural fibers is automatically more energy-efficient. Therefore, pay attention to certifications and organic farming when purchasing, as only these products are truly more sustainable.

Before buying clothes, think carefully about whether you really need the item, and try to repair broken clothes instead of replacing them. Sustainability scientist Florian Henle also recommends using green electricity for your household. It's best to choose a green electricity provider that promotes the expansion of renewable energies.
