Summer is fast approaching, and little adventurers can't wait to spend every free minute outside. While they're basking in the sun, it's important to protect their sensitive skin from the intense sun rays.
Children's skin needs special protection, especially in summer, as it is still developing its own UV protection – and the right clothing plays a crucial role in this. UV rays can penetrate even through shirts and pants and cause sunburn.
What should you pay attention to when choosing summer clothing?
We all know that children need to be protected from the sun on hot summer days. But choosing the right clothing is also crucial and can play an important role in UV protection.According to the Consumer Protection Agency, every piece of clothing protects children's skin – the degree of protection depends on the weave density and the colors.
Therefore, the following tips should be considered when choosing your summer clothing:
- The more densely the material is woven, and
-
The stronger the colors , the better the protection against UV radiation
The fibers are crucial!
Of all natural fibers, wool offers the best protection against UV rays. Other natural fibers such as cotton and linen, as well as natural synthetic fibers such as viscose and modal, are particularly popular in summer. However, these fabrics offer less protection on average due to their coarse fibers. It should be noted, however, that the garments' protection improves after the first wash, as the fibers shrink during washing. Natural fibers, especially those that have not been chemically treated, offer better skin compatibility in summer. Color is also crucial: Darker garments offer better protection against harmful UV rays than lighter ones.
In fact, synthetic materials like polyester also protect against UV rays in summer due to their dense weave. However, fabrics containing plastic do not allow the skin to breathe and retain moisture and heat. This, in turn, can cause skin irritation, which is why we advise against using synthetic clothing as sun protection.
The cut is also very important!
Loose-fitting clothing with long sleeves and long trouser legs offers better sun protection than tight-fitting garments. A loose-fitting cotton shirt in bold colors offers significantly greater protection than a light, tight-fitting linen top. Long summer clothing is also more beneficial here than cuts that are too short.
The best mix: cream and natural fibers!
To be on the safe side, even if you wear suitable clothing, you should still apply plenty of sunscreen to your covered skin in the summer to ensure effective sun protection.
